## How buying works

## Fees

- Buyer fees: 5% buyer's premium (minimum £250) + VAT at 20% on the fees only (no VAT on the vehicle price for margin-scheme cars).
- Worked example: Winning bid £10,000 → buyer's premium £500 + VAT £100 = £10,600 total (plus optional delivery).
- Bid increments: £0–£1,000: £50; £1,000–£5,000: £100; £5,000–£10,000: £200; £10,000–£25,000: £250; above £25,000: £500.
- A bid placed in the final 2 minutes extends the auction by 2 minutes, so there is no last-second sniping.
- Payment: UK bank transfer within 48 hours of the invoice.

- **How do online car auctions work on SecondCar?** Each vehicle is listed with a start and end time. Registered buyers bid online; the highest bid when the timer ends wins, provided any hidden reserve is met. A bid placed in the final 2 minutes extends the auction by 2 minutes, so there is no last-second sniping.
- **What fees do I pay as a buyer?** On top of the winning bid you pay a 5% buyer's premium (minimum £250) + VAT at 20% on the fees only (no VAT on the vehicle price for margin-scheme cars). For example: Winning bid £10,000 → buyer's premium £500 + VAT £100 = £10,600 total (plus optional delivery). Fees are shown on every vehicle page before you bid.
- **Can I buy a car without bidding?** Yes. Lots marked Buy Now can be bought instantly at a fixed price, and some lots accept offers. A Buy Now request is reviewed by our team before the invoice is issued.
- **Are the cars inspected?** Yes. Every vehicle comes with a free inspection report covering exterior, interior, electrics, mechanical condition, a road test and tyres, graded from 1 (excellent) to 5 (poor), plus photographed damage.
- **Do the cars have an HPI check?** Where available we run an HPI-style history check for outstanding finance, insurance write-off category, stolen markers, mileage discrepancies and plate changes, and show the result on the vehicle page.
- **What is a maximum (proxy) bid?** You enter the most you are willing to pay and the system bids on your behalf in the smallest increments needed to keep you in the lead, up to your maximum. Other bidders never see your maximum.
