Why Choose Second Gears Cars at Auction?
Buying a second gears car through SecondCar means more control and transparency than most private sales or forecourts. Every car is independently inspected, with a free downloadable report and a clear condition grade. You’ll see the full DVLA and MOT history, plus HPI-style data covering outstanding finance, write-off, and theft records. Our auctions are timed, so you can bid confidently without last-second sniping. Prefer not to wait? Many lots also have a Buy Now option for immediate purchase.

Running Costs, Insurance and Reliability
Buying a used car at auction can mean significant savings, but it’s important to factor in running costs. Many of our vehicles are hybrids or modern petrols, offering improved fuel economy and lower emissions. Insurance groups vary, so check the inspection report for details specific to each lot. All cars come with MOT history and current status, so you know when the next test is due and whether any advisories need attention. Our inspection reports flag up any mechanical or cosmetic issues, so you can budget realistically for the year ahead.
How SecondCar Auctions and Fees Work
Registering to bid is free and takes just a few minutes. Once verified, you can place bids or Buy Now offers straight away. Auctions use clear bid increments—£50 for cars under £1,000, £100 for £1,000–£5,000, and so on. Winning bidders pay a 5% buyer’s premium (minimum £250), with VAT at 20% on the fees only. There’s no VAT on the vehicle price for margin-scheme cars. Payment is by UK bank transfer from your account, and you’ll receive an official invoice in your buyer dashboard. Once payment is confirmed, you can collect the car or arrange UK delivery.
What to Check Before You Bid
Before bidding, review the inspection report, MOT history, and HPI-style data for each car. Make sure you understand the car’s condition, service history, and any advisories. Check the V5C logbook status and confirm the number of previous owners. If you have questions, our team is available for support. Remember, all bids are binding, so ensure you’re comfortable with the car and the total cost, including buyer’s premium and VAT on fees.
