Who we are
SecondCar is the controller of your personal data for the purposes of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. Contact us at hello@secondcar.co.uk.
What we collect
- Account data: name, email, phone number, postal address, buyer type and, for trade buyers, company details.
- Transaction data: bids, maximum bids, offers, purchases, invoices and payment confirmations.
- Identity checks: photo ID shown at collection and any verification we reasonably require to prevent fraud.
- Communications: enquiries, emails and support messages.
- Usage data: pages viewed, searches, vehicles watched, device and browser information, IP address and approximate location.
How and why we use it
- To provide your account, run auctions and complete purchases (contract).
- To issue invoices, keep accounting records and prevent fraud and money laundering (legal obligation and legitimate interests).
- To send service emails such as outbid, won and payment notices (contract).
- To send marketing and alerts you have opted into (consent — withdraw any time).
- To measure and improve the website and our advertising (consent for non-essential cookies; otherwise legitimate interests).
Analytics and advertising
- First-party analytics: we record page views and key actions (such as searches, watching a car or placing a bid) on our own systems to understand demand and improve the service.
- Google Analytics 4: with your consent, we use GA4 to measure website use. Google acts as our processor; IP addresses are not stored by GA4.
- Meta Pixel and Conversions API: with your consent, we share limited event data (for example that a page was viewed or an enquiry sent, and hashed contact details where applicable) with Meta Platforms Ireland Ltd to measure and improve our adverts. Server-side events are only sent where you have given consent.
- You can change your choices at any time through the cookie settings link in the footer.
Sharing
We share data only with service providers who help us run the platform (hosting, email delivery, image hosting, payment reconciliation, vehicle-history checks, transport partners and professional advisers), with authorities where required by law, and with a buyer or seller of our business. We never sell your data.
International transfers
Some providers process data outside the UK. Where they do, we rely on UK adequacy regulations or the International Data Transfer Agreement / Addendum.
How long we keep it
Account data is kept while your account is open and for up to 6 years after your last transaction to meet tax and legal obligations. Analytics data is kept for up to 26 months.
Your rights
You have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict or object to the use of your data, to data portability and to withdraw consent. Contact hello@secondcar.co.uk. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
